Grains of paradise from Africa were an important spice in Europe in the 5th century, especially with regard to the still missing sea routes to India. Grains of paradise were important as a substitute for black pepper, which is found mainly in many dishes and spice mixes in West African cuisine. It was not until the Renaissance that black pepper finally supplanted the grains of paradise in Europe.
